  • From 1902 unitl his death in 1919, Augustine Pecos, was the last survivor of the 17 people whom emigrated from the Pueblo of Pecos to Jemez Pueblo in 1838. Barely a teenager, around the age of 12 or 15, Pecos joined the small group who fled their desolate pueblo to become part of Jemez, the only other pueblo in New Mexico whose inhabitants spoke their native language of Towa. In 1904, Pecos provided the names of the diaspora, which proved to be invaluable to the history of New Mexico pueblos.
