Santa Fe History Along Highway 599

Betty Boyce Stewart loved animals.

There’s lots of trafiic on Highway 599 which bypasses the city of Santa Fe. A couple of landmarks along the way are a part of Santa Fe History. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society would have never been possible with out the help of a local builder. Betty Boyce Stewart was born in 1925 in Dalhart, T.X. She grew up on ranches in Texas and New Mexico and died in Santa Fe in 1994.

Custom Builder with Flair

The determined woman founded Stewart Construction Company. Stewart built traditional New Mexican homes for a clientele of discerning taste. Her homes included antique doors, vigas and moldings, salvaged from old adobe buildings. In addition to gaining a reputation for her expertise as a home builder, Stewart becme a familiar sight around town in her signature cowboy boots and her love of animals. When Stewart died she left a generous bequest to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society.

The golfing sensation Marty Sanchez.

Marty Sanchez was born in Santa Fe in 1966. At eight years of age he won first place in the Pee-Wee Division of the Sun County PGA Junior Tournament at the Santa Fe Country Club. After completing his primary education at St. Anne’s Parochial school, he went on to Santa Fe High and was a member of the SFHS Golf Team where won many tournaments throughout the state.

A Dream of Becoming a Professional Golfer

When Sanchez graduated from Santa Fe High in 1984 he received golf scholarships to both N.M. Junior College and Western N.M. University, winning championships for both schools. His dream was to become a professional golfer but in the fall of 1991 he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor surrounding his vital organs and died in the spring of 1992. Today, the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe Golf course is named in his honor.
